When February does its worst, Gravenhurst throws a party in the snow. The Gravenhurst Winter Carnival, organized by the Town of Gravenhurst, takes over Family Day weekend each year, spreading events across town for three days of determined mid-winter fun.
The carnival’s mascot is Skokie the Otter — and Skokie’s face is famous locally, because Gravenhurst kids design the annual carnival button in a Town-run contest, with Skokie’s Birthday Party a headline event for young families. The programme mixes the classic and the gloriously odd: a demolition derby, cardboard box races, snow and ice sculptures in Gull Lake Park, sno-yoga, donut-eating contests, a polar dip, ball hockey, skating, snowmobile races, food trucks and live music, including a Carnival Music Night.
It all closes Sunday night with fireworks over Muskoka Wharf — colour bursting above the frozen bay while the steamships sleep in the ice. The Winter Carnival is less an escape from a Muskoka winter than a celebration of surviving it together: the whole town, out in the cold, on purpose.
