The Powassan Maple Syrup Festival takes place each spring in Powassan, usually on a Saturday in late April. The 2026 festival marked its 24th year, and it has grown into one of the largest early season events in northern Ontario. It is a one day celebration of maple syrup season, drawing thousands of visitors into this small town to taste the first sweet flavours of spring.
The festival stretches across downtown Powassan, with activities at multiple locations along Main Street and at 250 Clark. Nearly 200 vendors set up booths selling everything from maple syrup and maple candy to crafts, baked goods, and local art. Producers like Matthews Maple Syrup, Bella Hill Maple Syrup, and Sugarstone Farm are featured, giving visitors a chance to meet the people behind the product. A free shuttle bus runs throughout the day, connecting downtown to off site parking and to Matthews Maple Syrup, where sugarbush tours run all day. Walking through the maple bush, past rows of tapped trees and sap lines, is a highlight for many.
Food is everywhere. Two pancake breakfasts run in the morning, one at the Royal Canadian Legion and one at the Commanda Community Centre, both serving stacks of pancakes with fresh local syrup. The day kicks off with opening ceremonies on Main Street at 10 am, followed by a pancake flipping contest that always gets a laugh. There is live entertainment through the day, and the whole town has a festive buzz.
The festival happens rain or shine, and it is run largely by volunteers. For anyone visiting cottage country in April, it is a sweet and lively way to welcome spring.
