The Trout Creek Winter Carnival is an annual community celebration held each February in the village of Trout Creek, in the Almaguin Highlands. It is one of the highlights of the winter season in the area, drawing families and neighbours together for several days of cold weather fun. The carnival usually runs over four or five days, often timed around the Family Day weekend, with events centred on the Trout Creek Arena.
Hockey is at the heart of the carnival. Men’s and women’s tournaments run through the weekend, with games starting on Friday evening and building toward the finals on Sunday. The arena comes alive with players, fans, and the sounds of skates on ice. Between games, there is plenty to keep everyone busy. Past carnivals have featured bingo nights with big jackpots, snow sculpture contests, scavenger hunts for kids, colouring contests, and a photo booth. There is usually a Saturday night dance with a DJ, open to adults, and a Sunday morning pancake breakfast that is a favourite for families.
The carnival has a true small town feel. Local groups like the Trout Creek Lions help put it on, and volunteers run everything from the food tables to the 50/50 draws. Kids get their own hockey games and activities like chuck a puck, where they can win prizes from the players bench. Entry is kept affordable, with weekend and day passes available at low prices, so the whole family can take part.
For visitors to cottage country in February, the Trout Creek Winter Carnival is a warm and welcoming way to experience a real northern Ontario winter tradition. It is loud, friendly, and full of the kind of community spirit that makes small towns special.
