The Bala Cranberry Festival has turned Ontario’s “Cranberry Capital” into a three-day autumn pilgrimage. This volunteer-run, non-profit festival has been going since 1984, held every year on the weekend after Thanksgiving — the 2026 edition just wrapped this past weekend. What began as a way to extend Bala’s tourist season has grown into a Festivals & Events Ontario Top 100 Event that has drawn over half a million attendees and paid out more than $150,000 in scholarships to local students.
Downtown Bala becomes the festival grounds, with venues stretching from Maple Avenue to the arena, the community centre and Portage Landing, where the farmers market sets up. The juried arts and crafts arena anchors the shopping, the main stage and Busker Square carry a lineup of local musicians, and KidsZone, photobooths and candy-coated cranberries keep the younger crowd busy. Dog-friendly outdoor areas mean the whole family can come.
Behind the fun is a real mission: festival proceeds go back into the community through grants to local organizations. It’s harvest-season Muskoka at its most joyful — and proof that a small town can throw a party with a very big heart.
