The Sunderland Fall Fair brings the sights, sounds, and traditions of rural Ontario into the heart of Sunderland each September. First established in 1851, it is the oldest agricultural fair in Durham Region and remains an important gathering place for local farmers, families, exhibitors, and visitors. Rather than taking place on a large commercial fairground outside town, the celebration unfolds within the community, giving it the friendly and personal atmosphere of a village-wide tradition.
Agriculture is at the centre of the fair. Horse and cattle shows introduce visitors to the skill, preparation, and care involved in raising and presenting livestock. Light and heavy horse classes highlight different breeds and working traditions, while carriage-driving competitions combine precision, control, and heritage. A 4-H dairy event gives young agricultural participants an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned while helping visitors better understand the relationship between local farms and the food found on Ontario tables.
The fair also features antique tractors and vehicles, agricultural displays, homecraft exhibits, local vendors, and plenty of food. Inside the exhibition areas, visitors can discover produce, baking, preserves, flowers, photography, crafts, and other entries reflecting the talents of people from Sunderland and the surrounding countryside. These displays give the event a homemade character that cannot be recreated by a conventional festival.
As the fair continues, the atmosphere becomes louder and more energetic. Lawn tractor pulls, special demonstrations, and grandstand entertainment add action to the traditional agricultural programming. The demolition derby is a crowd favourite, filling the grounds with roaring engines, heavy collisions, and enthusiastic cheering.
The Sunderland Fall Fair is more than a collection of competitions and attractions. It is a celebration of the people, farms, skills, and traditions that have shaped Brock Township for generations. Visitors leave with a stronger appreciation for rural life and the enduring community spirit of Sunderland.
