Humphrey Museum (Seguin Township Museum)

c6

The Humphrey Museum, also known as the Seguin Township Museum, stands at 3 Museum Road in Seguin on beautifully landscaped grounds. The building itself is the main artifact. Built of hand hewn logs in the early 1870s, it began life as a church before becoming a rural one room school where generations of local children received their education. The school closed in 1956 and sat empty until 1973, when six students working under a provincial grant program rebuilt it as a museum.

The museum’s focus is the life and times of yesteryear, paying tribute to the pioneer families who settled this rugged country. Inside you will find displays of pioneer tools, household goods, photographs, and documents that tell the story of clearing land, building community, and making a life in the Parry Sound District. It is community history at its most personal, the story of neighbours and families rather than famous names.

The grounds are as much a part of the visit as the building. Set among the trees with gardens and open space, the museum makes a peaceful stop on a drive through the township. Through the summer the museum runs programs for kids and families, from craft mornings to hands-on history activities, making it a lovely outing for grandchildren and grandparents alike.
