Brook’s Falls is a quiet, scenic cascade tucked along the Magnetawan River near Emsdale, just north of Huntsville in Ontario’s Almaguin Highlands.
What makes the site special compared to many waterways in cottage country is its wild, natural state. While most drops along the Magnetawan River were altered or flooded by old logging chutes and modern hydroelectric dams, Brook’s Falls flows completely unobstructed. It tumbles about fifteen feet down a wide, tiered shelf of dark Canadian Shield granite before charging through a narrow gorge of rapids downstream.
The waterfall sits inside Brook’s Falls Park off Deer Lake Road, offering a rugged atmosphere without the crowds found in busier provincial parks. There are no built railings, fences, or commercial platforms, letting visitors stand directly beside the bedrock shelves at the river’s edge. A gentle walking trail winds through a forest of pine, hemlock, and birch, providing clear views of both the main rush of water and the lower riverbed.
The falls change dramatically throughout the year, swelling into a loud, fast torrent during the spring thaw and providing a calm, colorful scene when surrounded by bright red and orange foliage in the autumn. It remains one of the best peaceful roadside stops just off Highway 11 for anyone wanting classic northern Ontario scenery.
