The Orville Lake Nature Trail is the farm’s eco-tour in miniature — a 2.3-kilometre easy loop at the Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery that trades distance for discovery. Named for Orville Johnston, the first generation of the family behind the farm, it’s a walk through the property’s natural side, taking most hikers about half an hour.
Starting from the parking area southwest of the farm’s main buildings, the trail climbs gently over light hills with open views across the countryside before descending toward the wetlands. What sets this loop apart is its interpretive signage: the trail is designed as a self-guided nature lesson, with signs explaining the local flora, fauna and ecology at every turn.
The scenic highlight is the viewpoint overlooking the wetlands, where picnic sites invite you to linger and watch for birds — the trail is a favourite with birders. It’s also one of the farm’s more peaceful corners, unlikely to be crowded even on busy harvest weekends. Open to hikers in summer and snowshoers in winter, with dogs welcome on leash. Like the other farm trails, you’ll need a farm pass to venture beyond the store and café area — a small price for one of the prettiest short walks in the Bala area.
