Bala’s Public Docks are where the village’s soul is most visible. This township-maintained network of docks and boat launches — on Weismiller Street, the Moon River, Portage Street, Windsor Park and Bala Falls Road — keeps Bala the water-oriented community it has always been. Around here, arriving by boat isn’t a novelty; it’s how the place works.
The crown jewel is the Bala Bay Dock on Portage Island, a designated heritage property. This is the site of the old Steamboat Wharf, where passengers arriving on the summer trains at Bala’s 1907 railway station transferred to steamships bound for cottages across the lakes. Steamship landings have been recorded in Bala since the 1860s, and the dock has hosted the annual Bala Regatta for over a century. The heritage designation says it plainly: these docks support the traditional practice of arriving and departing by water, something that still defines the character of the area.
Today the docks are as busy as ever — boaters tying up to walk into town, swimmers cooling off, picnickers claiming the shoreline. They’re free, public and unmistakably Muskoka: the water isn’t scenery here, it’s the main street.
