Northumberland Turkey Trot

images-12

The Northumberland Turkey Trot turns Thanksgiving Monday into an energetic celebration of movement, community, and autumn in Cobourg. Beginning at the Cobourg YMCA, the event welcomes experienced runners, casual walkers, families, and children for a festive morning that feels more like a community gathering than a highly competitive road race.

Participants can choose from timed 5-kilometre and 2.5-kilometre events, making the Turkey Trot accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities. Younger runners can join the Wing Ding 1K Kids Fun Run, while the Gobble Wobble gives children four and under their own opportunity to cross a finish line and share in the excitement. The routes travel through the Cobourg Conservation Area, where wooded surroundings, uneven terrain, and gentle rolling hills add a scenic seasonal challenge.

Costumes and turkey-themed accessories are enthusiastically encouraged. Runners may appear in feathered hats, bright autumn colours, or complete turkey outfits, adding humour and personality to the course. Participants showing exceptional Thanksgiving spirit can compete for the Golden Drumstick, a playful award that captures the event’s welcoming and lighthearted character.

The Northumberland Turkey Trot also serves an important community purpose. Proceeds support the YMCA Strong Communities Campaign, which helps reduce financial barriers to YMCA programs and services for children, teenagers, adults, and seniors. Every registration therefore contributes to opportunities for people throughout Northumberland County.

Whether participants are racing for a personal best, walking with friends, cheering for their children, or simply looking for an active start to Thanksgiving, the Turkey Trot offers a memorable way to enjoy the season. It combines exercise, colourful fall scenery, charitable giving, and local spirit in an event that has become a much-loved Cobourg holiday tradition.
