Powassan Agricultural Fair

download-8-1

The Powassan Agricultural Fair, also known as the Powassan Fall Fair, is held every year on Labour Day weekend at the fairgrounds on 55 Fairview Lane in Powassan. The 2026 fair was the 128th, making it one of the oldest running fairs in the region. It is organized by the Powassan Agricultural Society, a volunteer run charitable group that was first incorporated in 1895. What started with 28 exhibitors and $70 in gate receipts has grown into a two day event that draws crowds from across the district.

The fair stays true to its agricultural roots. There are livestock displays, competitions for crafts, baking, needlework, flowers, and vegetables. Local farmers and gardeners show off their best work, and the prize lists are taken seriously. But the fair is about more than agriculture. Saturday features the heavy horse pull, where teams of massive horses strain against weighted sleds while the crowd cheers. Sunday brings the demolition derby, a loud and chaotic favourite. There is also live music on both days, a penny sale, silent auction, and 50/50 draws.

The fairgrounds themselves are worth a look. The exhibition building was donated in 1938 by the O.W. Thompson Company, which had used it to store fox pelts. It still serves as the main exhibit hall today. Food vendors, a midway feel, and the smell of popcorn and diesel fill the air.

Wristbands are sold at local shops in the lead up to the fair. Kids 12 and under get in free. It is a classic small town fall fair, and a proud tradition in Powassan.
