Muskoka Arts & Crafts Studio Tour

MuskokaTour

Every fall, over two weekends in late September and early October, dozens of Muskoka artists throw open their studio doors. The Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour is one of the oldest studio tours in Canada, running since 1979, and it has become a beloved fall ritual: a free, self-guided driving tour through some of the prettiest countryside in Ontario, with art waiting at every stop.

The tour gathers painters, potters, glassblowers, jewellers, woodworkers, textile artists and sculptors, all working in studios scattered among the lakes and forests. Visitors follow the tour map from studio to studio, meeting the artists in their own creative spaces, watching demonstrations, hearing the stories behind the work and buying original pieces directly from the people who made them. It is about as far from a generic gift shop as you can get.

Part of the magic is the setting. The route winds past hidden corners of Muskoka that most summer visitors never see, with fall colours at their peak and the summer crowds long gone. Many people make a whole weekend of it, pairing studio visits with hikes, cranberry festivals and long lakeside lunches.

Whether you are a serious collector hunting for a statement piece or just someone who loves seeing how things are made, the tour is a warm, welcoming way to experience Muskoka’s thriving arts community. Just be warned: it is very hard to leave empty-handed when you have watched the artist’s hands shape the very thing you are about to take home.
