Hatchery Falls Trail

HatcheryFallsTrail

Tucked into the forest near Ullswater, Hatchery Falls is one of those Muskoka secrets that rewards a short walk. The trail is only about ten to fifteen minutes each way along a well-marked path, but it leads somewhere that feels far deeper in the wilderness than it is.

The falls themselves are a narrow, steep cascade roughly eight metres high, tumbling down bare rock on the Skeleton River. What makes them special is the approach: before the main drop, the river slides over a long section of grooved rock, worn into smooth channels by centuries of flowing water. It’s a striking piece of natural sculpture, and photographers love it in spring when the water is running high.

A word of advice that locals pass along: many visitors stop at a small artificial falls just upstream of the road and assume that’s the whole show. It isn’t. The real Hatchery Falls waits at the far end of the hike — start from the big open parking area, walk away from the road staying close to the river, and follow the trail where it enters the woods at the far side of the clearing.

Most days you’ll have the place to yourself, though warm summer afternoons can draw a crowd of day hikers. There are no safety railings here, so sturdy footwear and sensible caution are the order of the day — the rocks are beautiful but slippery. Pack a snack, take your time, and enjoy one of the quieter corners of Muskoka Lakes.
