Charleston Lake Sandstone Island Trail

download-39-2
Sandstone Island Trail is one of Charleston Lake Provincial Park’s signature hiking experiences and offers visitors a scenic route through forests, shoreline landscapes, and elevated lookout areas overlooking Charleston Lake. The trail combines natural beauty, moderate hiking terrain, and excellent lake views, making it a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts exploring Eastern Ontario cottage country. The route passes through mixed hardwood forests, rocky ridges, and waterfront sections while connecting hikers with scenic vistas across Charleston Lake and surrounding Frontenac Arch terrain. Interpretive signage along portions of the trail highlights local geology, ecology, and the park’s biodiversity. Wildlife sightings are common and may include loons, turtles, songbirds, and deer. The trail is particularly popular during autumn when fall colours transform the forest canopy into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Photographers and hikers often visit during morning and evening hours for softer lighting and quieter trail conditions. Portions of the route include rocky surfaces and elevation changes, making proper footwear advisable. Sandstone Island Trail is frequently combined with canoeing, camping, and additional hiking adventures within Charleston Lake Provincial Park during weekend getaways and cottage-country road trips.
