Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park is a dramatic day-use park known for its towering cliffs, deep canyon views, and rugged northern Ontario scenery. Located near Dorion, the park protects a striking gorge that measures roughly 100 metres deep and is surrounded by forest, rock, and sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
The main experience is a short loop trail that leads from the parking area to two lookout platforms overlooking the canyon. The walk is relatively brief and accessible for many visitors, with forested sections and boardwalk-style areas leading to the viewpoints. From the lookouts, guests can see steep rock walls, the canyon floor far below, and wide views across the Thunder Bay District landscape.
Ouimet Canyon is also known for its unique natural environment. Because of the cold air trapped at the bottom of the canyon, rare Arctic-alpine plants grow there, far south of where they would normally be found. This makes the park interesting not only for its views, but also for its geology, ecology, and unusual microclimate.
The park is especially appealing for photographers, hikers, families, road trippers, and travellers exploring the north shore of Lake Superior. Its location makes it a memorable stop between Thunder Bay, Nipigon, and other scenic attractions in the region.
Overall, Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park offers a powerful and accessible northern Ontario nature experience. Whether someone is visiting for the lookouts, the geology, the forest trail, or the breathtaking scale of the canyon, the park provides an unforgettable glimpse of the rugged beauty of northwestern Ontario.
