Waubuno Beach is Parry Sound’s flagship beach, a Blue Flag certified stretch of sand at the end of Prospect Street. The large sandy beach shelves into shallow, calm water, making it the town’s favourite family swimming spot, with a buoyed swimming area watched by lifeguards from Canada Day through Labour Day weekend.
The park around the beach is set up for full days out: a playground, beach volleyball courts, a snack bar canteen, change rooms and washrooms, a cool water fountain, bicycle racks and plenty of free parking including accessible spaces. The Rotary and Algonquin Regiment Fitness Trail runs right past, so you can walk or cycle in from downtown or the Stockey Centre.
The beach is named for the steamer Waubuno, a wooden sidewheeler that sailed from Collingwood bound for Parry Sound on November 22, 1879, and sank in a violent Georgian Bay gale with all 24 aboard. Her anchor, recovered in 1959, stands by a historical plaque at the park — a sombre note among the sandcastles.
Rules keep it family-friendly: kids need direct adult supervision, dogs stay off the sand, and everyone swims inside the buoy line. On a hot July afternoon it fills up, and deservedly — for a town beach minutes from everywhere, it is hard to beat.
