Old Woman Bay is one of the most striking scenic stops in Lake Superior Provincial Park. Located directly off Highway 17, the bay offers a dramatic combination of sandy shoreline, driftwood, clear Lake Superior water, forested hills, and towering cliffs. Its name comes from a rock formation in the cliffs that is said to resemble the face of an old woman looking out over the lake.
The beach stretches along a wide curve of shoreline and provides a peaceful place to walk, take photos, picnic, or simply enjoy the scale and beauty of Lake Superior. The water is cold and powerful, but the setting is unforgettable, with waves rolling in from the open lake and high cliffs rising along the side of the bay.
Old Woman Bay is also a popular access point for outdoor exploring. Across the highway, the Nokomis Trail offers a more challenging hike with elevated views over the bay and Lake Superior. The area is especially beautiful in autumn, when the surrounding forest turns bright shades of red, orange, and gold.
Overall, Old Woman Bay is a must-see stop for travellers driving between Sault Ste. Marie and Wawa. Whether someone is stretching their legs during a road trip, hiking the nearby trail, enjoying a picnic, or taking in the rugged shoreline, the bay offers a powerful and memorable Lake Superior experience rooted in natural beauty, northern wilderness, and iconic Algoma scenery.
