Fort Frontenac was originally established in 1673 by Comte de Frontenac as an important French trading post and military fortress at the confluence of Lake Ontario and the Cataraqui River. It played a key role in the fur trade and in colonial conflicts, later rebuilt and occupied at various times by French and British forces, and now forms part of an active military installation with archaeological remnants visible downtown
